How Display Group Designs, Builds and Produces Experiences People Remember

Great event ideas often begin with a question:

“Can we actually build this?”

A massive outdoor structure in the middle of downtown. An immersive branded pop-up. A larger-than-life scenic element. An interactive installation. A completely transformed corporate environment. A stage surrounded by LED, projection, lighting and custom-built architecture. For more than four decades, Display Group has helped agencies, brands and organizations turn ambitious creative concepts into physical experiences.

That is what custom event fabrication is really about.

It isn’t simply woodworking, metalworking or building props. Event fabrication brings together creative design, engineering, craftsmanship, graphics, technology, logistics and live-event expertise to transform an idea into something an audience can physically experience.

At Display Group, we specialize in custom builds, branded displays, branded structures, immersive environments, scenic elements and interactive installations designed specifically for live events, brand activations, corporate experiences, exhibits, pop-ups, sports and entertainment environments, and experiential marketing programs.

And because fabrication is only part of what we do, those physical environments can be integrated with AV, lighting, rigging, video, graphics and live event production.

Built by people. Built in-house. Built for the experience.

What Is Custom Event Fabrication?

Custom event fabrication is the process of designing, engineering and constructing physical elements specifically for an event, activation or branded environment. Unlike off-the-shelf event décor, custom fabrication begins with the experience a brand or creative team wants to create.

That can include:

  • Branded structures and environments
  • Custom stages and scenic elements
  • Experiential marketing installations
  • Interactive installations
  • Retail and branded pop-ups
  • Trade show and exhibit fabrication
  • Dimensional signage and oversized graphics
  • Large-scale props and 3D objects
  • Product displays
  • Sponsor activations
  • Custom bars and hospitality environments
  • Entry features and portals
  • Photo opportunities and social-media moments
  • Corporate event environments
  • Outdoor structures
  • Themed environments

The objective isn’t simply to manufacture an object. It is to create something that supports the brand, audience and experience.

From Creative Concept to Physical Experience

The strongest custom builds begin long before materials reach the fabrication floor.

They begin with understanding the idea.

  • What should people see?
  • What should they feel?
  • How should they interact with the environment?
  • What role does the brand need to play?
  • How does the structure need to function?
  • How will it be transported, installed, operated and eventually removed?

Those questions influence every decision that follows.

Display Group’s custom fabrication process can bring together concept development, custom design, engineering, material selection, fabrication, finishing, graphics, technology integration, logistics, installation and event production. That integrated approach is particularly important for agencies and brands developing ambitious experiential projects.

Instead of designing something first and discovering later that it is difficult or impossible to execute, fabrication expertise can be incorporated into the creative process from the beginning. The result is an experience that isn’t merely impressive in a rendering.

Event Fabrication in Action

The best way to understand custom event fabrication is to see what can actually be built. Below are several Display Group projects that demonstrate how fabrication, design, technology and production can come together.

StockX: Turning a Retail Space Into an Immersive Brand Experience

When creative agency Supper developed the vision for StockX’s 10-year anniversary pop-up in downtown Detroit, the objective went well beyond creating a temporary store.

The environment needed to feel like StockX.

Display Group helped transform 1001 Woodward into an immersive three-day retail experience where visitors could explore, interact and shop within the brand. The project combined custom fabrication, retail buildouts, integrated AV, lighting and interactive elements into one cohesive environment. Nearly 700 products were incorporated into the experience while hundreds of guests moved through the space. The StockX project demonstrates one of the most important principles of experiential fabrication:

The environment itself becomes part of the brand experience. Walls, fixtures, displays, lighting, graphics and interactive elements aren’t separate components. Together, they create a physical expression of the brand.

For agencies developing experiential campaigns, this is where a full-service fabrication partner becomes particularly valuable, taking a creative concept and translating it into an environment people can actually enter and experience.

2024 NFL Draft Countdown Clock: Fabrication at a Monumental Scale

Some custom builds have to do much more than look impressive. They have to perform.

More than two years before the 2024 NFL Draft arrived in Detroit, Display Group partnered with the NFL and Detroit Sports Commission to create a massive countdown clock near Campus Martius.

This wasn’t a temporary indoor prop. It was a large-scale outdoor branded structure designed to remain in downtown Detroit while exposed to the elements.

Display Group’s custom fabrication team worked from early concepts through final installation. The process included engineering for wind and weather, structural planning, material testing, fabrication, finishing and coordination with project partners.

The clock was fabricated in Display Group’s shop and assembled on-site in downtown Detroit. It ultimately became more than a functional countdown. It became a landmark announcing that one of the largest sporting events in the country was coming to Detroit.

The project illustrates an important distinction between simple event décor and true event fabrication. Large-scale experiential structures require an understanding of aesthetics, engineering, materials, safety, transportation and installation. Every one of those disciplines must work together.

Money20/20 Las Vegas: Where Fabrication Meets Event Technology

At a major conference or trade show, the audience isn’t simply competing for information. Brands are competing for attention.

At Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas, Display Group supported engineering and custom fabrication for multiple show-floor stages and activations.

The environments incorporated:

  • Interactive experiences.
  • Large-scale LED elements.
  • Projection mapping.
  • Living walls.
  • Overhead structures.
  • Oversized 3D décor.
  • Full stage builds.

This is where the definition of fabrication expands considerably.

Today’s most compelling branded environments increasingly combine physical construction with digital technology. A wall can become a video surface. A scenic element can become interactive. A stage can become an immersive visual environment. And a structure can incorporate lighting, projection, LED and digital content.

Display Group’s production capabilities also extended across show production, stage management, show calling, AV, lighting, logistics, labor, pre-production and installation. Instead of treating fabrication and technology as separate disciplines, they can be designed as parts of the same experience.

UWM Holiday Parties: Building Entire Worlds

Custom fabrication can create an individual object. It can also transform an entire venue. Since 2021, Display Group has partnered with United Wholesale Mortgage to produce large-scale employee holiday experiences attended by thousands of people.

For one event, guests entered through a themed airport registration area before exploring environments inspired by Egypt, Antarctica, Japan and Brazil. Display Group fabricated oversized scenic elements including towering Egyptian statues and torii gates while integrating scenic construction with AV, lighting, staging, rigging and event production.

The result demonstrates the power of themed environments and scenic fabrication. Instead of decorating a room, fabrication can change the audience’s perception of the space altogether. That distinction is important. Decor adds elements to an environment. And experiential fabrication can create the environment.

Uber One at Super Bowl LIX: Bringing an Agency’s Vision to Life

Some of the most successful experiential projects happen when creative agencies and production partners work as one team. For Uber One’s Super Bowl LIX event, Display Group collaborated with David Stark Design to help bring an ambitious creative environment to life.

The experience featured a golden, Colosseum-inspired stage, an atmosphere designed around mirrored surfaces and massive football-shaped disco balls. Display Group also delivered in-house AV production including lighting, audio and video, with more than 40 Display Group team members who contributed behind the scenes.

Projects like Uber One demonstrate the role a fabrication and production company can play for an agency partner. The agency can protect and lead the creative vision while Display Group provides the technical, fabrication and production infrastructure necessary to execute it. That relationship can extend from a single fabrication element to a fully integrated national experiential production.

Why Custom Fabrication Matters to Experiential Marketing

Experiential marketing asks audiences to do something traditional advertising cannot:

Step inside the brand.

That creates enormous creative opportunity. A branded display communicates a message. A branded environment surrounds the audience with it. An interactive installation invites people to participate in it. And a memorable experiential build can become content that extends well beyond the event itself through photography, video, earned media and social sharing. That makes fabrication more than a production requirement. It becomes part of the marketing strategy.

Branded Displays That Do More Than Display

Today’s branded displays need to work harder. They can create product interaction, communicate brand identity, provide a backdrop for content, facilitate demonstrations, encourage social sharing and guide guests through an experience.

Dimensionality matters. Material matters. Lighting matters. Technology matters. How people physically approach and interact with the display matters. Effective fabrication considers all of these elements together.

Branded Structures That Command Attention

Large-scale branded structures can create instant visual landmarks at festivals, sporting events, conferences, trade shows and corporate events. They might take the form of an entrance, pavilion, stage, product replica, sculptural element, sponsor installation or oversized branded object. The objective is simple: Create something audiences cannot ignore. But achieving that impact requires more than scale. The structure still needs to reflect the brand, function in its environment, withstand audience interaction and meet the technical demands of the venue.

Interactive Installations Turn Audiences Into Participants

Experiential marketing becomes particularly powerful when people stop being spectators. Interactive installations can incorporate touch, movement, lighting, video, projection, sound, games, sensors, digital content or physical interaction. The experience becomes something the audience participates in rather than merely observes. That interaction can increase dwell time, create memorable brand moments and generate natural opportunities for social content.

The most successful interactive experiences don’t add technology simply because it is available. The interaction has a purpose. It reinforces the story the brand is trying to tell.

One Partner. More Capabilities.

Complex experiential projects can require fabricators, designers, AV companies, lighting companies, graphics providers, rental companies, logistics partners and production teams. Every additional vendor creates another handoff. And every handoff introduces another opportunity for miscommunication.

A full-service event fabrication company can reduce those gaps by bringing more of the execution under one roof.

Display Group combines:

Custom Event Fabrication
Scenic environments, custom structures, dimensional elements, props, displays and experiential builds.

Design Solutions
Creative development and technical design that help turn ideas into buildable environments.

Audio Visual
Professional audio, video, LED and technology integration.

Lighting & Rigging
Lighting design, structural support and technical execution.

Live Event Production
Production management and technical execution from planning through show day.

Graphics and Branded Elements
Environmental graphics and dimensional branding that transform physical structures into brand experiences.

Installation and Logistics
Planning, transportation, labor, installation, on-site execution and strike.

The advantage isn’t simply convenience. It is integration. The people engineering the structure can communicate directly with the team integrating the LED. The designers can work with the fabricators. The fabricators can work with production. And the production that can coordinate installation.

That collaboration helps protect creative intent while reducing complexity.

A Fabrication Partner for Agencies

For experiential, advertising, event and creative agencies, choosing the right fabrication partner is especially important. Your client may never meet the fabricator. But they will absolutely experience the result.

Display Group works collaboratively with agencies as an extension of their production capabilities. That means the agency can retain ownership of the strategy, concept and client relationship while gaining access to a team capable of helping engineer, fabricate and execute the experience.

The goal isn’t to compete with the creative agency. It is to make the agency’s idea work.

Whether the need is one custom element, a complete branded environment or an integrated experiential production, Display Group can scale its involvement around the project.

What Should You Look for in an Event Fabrication Company?

When evaluating an event fabrication partner, don’t judge the company solely by its ability to build an attractive object.

Look at the complete production picture.

Can they understand the creative vision?

  • Can they engineer what they design?
  • Can they build at scale?
  • Can they integrate graphics and technology?
  • Can they manage complicated installation conditions?
  • Can they collaborate with agencies and other production partners?
  • Can they handle logistics?
  • Can they execute outside their home market?
  • Can they support the experience after fabrication is complete?

Most importantly:

  • Can they show you examples where they have already done it?

A fabrication portfolio should demonstrate more than craftsmanship. It should demonstrate problem solving.
